Humility of the Companions

بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

On the authority of Zayd bin Aslam, “A man said, ‘O’ Messenger of Allaah! No one will do an atom’s weight good except he will see it, and no one will do an atom’s weight evil except he will see it?’ He :saw: said, “Yes!’ Then the man left saying, ‘O’ my sins!’ The Prophet of Allaah صلى الله عليه و سلم then said, ‘That man has believed (i.e. has true Imaan).’” [Chain of narration is Muttasil and it’s men are trustworthy, Az-Zuhd war-Raqaa’iq/80]

‘Umar ibn ul-Khattaab :anhu: said, ‘The Prophet :saw: said, “Indeed Allah :swt: raises with this word (i.e. Qur’an) nations and humiliates others.” [Sahih Muslim]

An Explanation of the Hadith, “There are seven whom Allah will shade…”

31 December 2009

In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah :anhu: , the Messenger of Allah :saw: said,

“There are seven whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: a just ruler; a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah , the Mighty and Majestic; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love each other for Allah’s sake, meeting for that and parting upon that; a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position [for illegal intercourse], but be says: ‘I fear Allah ‘, a man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and a man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears.”[1]

:insh: we will go through the meaning of the hadith as understood by our Salaf us-Saaliheen phrase by phrase and will remove the misconceptions regarding the hadith held by many of our Muslim brothers and sisters.

“There are seven…”
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar :rahma: writes, “Apparently it is specifying the people who remember (Allah :swt:) with the reward of the one who remembers (Him). Al-Kirmani :rahma: refers to that with what is gained by the obedience (of ?:swt:) whether it is between the slave and His Lord or between him and the creation. And first of that is by the tongue and it is dhikr or with the heart and that is attachment to the mosque or with the body and that is growing up in worship (of Allah :swt:). Second is general and it is the just person or specific with the heart and that is the mutual love or with the wealth and that is charity or with the body and that is chastity.”[2]

“…in His Shade…
Al-Qaadhi ‘Iyaadh:rahma: said, “And the meaning here is the shade of the throne (of Allah :swt:).”[3] “And it is proven by a hadith (of) Salman from Sa’id bin Mansur with a good chain of narration , “There are seven whom Allah will shade in Shade of His throne.”[4]

Because of the Day of Judgement, the sun will be brought near the people’s heads so much so that they start sweating. Some will sweat until their ankles, some their shoulders whilst others will be totally immersed in their sweat and this will be according to the actions. That Day, there will be no shade except the Shade of the throne of Allah :swt:. Ibn Dinar :rahma: said, “And the intended meaning of this Shade is dignity, protection and avoidance form disliked things in that situation.”[5]

More to come soon :insh:

And Allah :swt: knows best

Hunger of the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam

25 December 2009

BismiLlah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim,

Abu Hurayrah radhi Allahu ‘anhu passed by a group of people who were eating a roasted sheep, and they invited him to sit and eat with them. He refused, saying, “The Messenger of Allah sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam left this world without even satisfying his hunger with barley bread.”[Sahih al-Bukhari]

An-Nu‘man ibnu Bashir radhi Allahu ‘anhuma narrated that ‘Umar ibn ul-Khattab radhi Allahu ‘anhu was mentioning the poverty that the people had become stricken with, saying, “I saw the Messenger of Allah sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam spend the whole day upset because of hunger, as he could not even get low quality of dates with which to fill his stomach.” [Sahih Muslim]

Anas ibnu Malik radhi Allahu ‘anhu said, “The Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam never ate his meals at a dining table or in an individual plate, and he never at thin well-baked bread until he died.” [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Allah has revealed to me…

9 November 2009

BismiLlah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim,

Narrated ‘Iyadh ibn Himaar radhi Allahu ‘anhu, the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam said, “Allah has revealed to me that you must be humble, so that no one oppresses another and boasts over another.” [Sunan Abi Dawud]

…you must be humble…”

Al-’Azizi said, “Humility is to completely surrender to the truth.” It was said, “It is lowering of the wings to the creation and leniency.” And it was said, “Acceptance of the truth from the elders or young ones, nobles or weak ones.”

…boasts over another …

Boasting is claiming superiority, glorification and nobility. ['Awn al-Ma'bud Sharh Sunan Abi Dawud]

Divisions of Sunnah

8 November 2009

BismiLlah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim

Al-Qaadhi Ibn Rushd rahimahuLlah divided the Sunnah in the Maliki view into four categories according to the strength of its methods of transmission and subject matter:

1)A Sunnah whose rejection is a mark of disbelief. If someone does reject it they are asked to repent. If they do not, they are to be killed as unbelievers. This applies to Sunnahs which have been transmitted by multiple transmission (mutawaatir). Acquiring knowledge of such Sunnah is obligatory: like wine being inlawful, the prayers being five, the Messenger of Allah sallAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam commanding the call of adhaan, and other similar things.

2)A Sunnah which only people of deviation, error and enial reject and which all the People of the Sunah agree to be sound: auch as he hadith of intercession, the Vision, the punishment in the grave, and similar things connected with faith, even if they are not mutawaatir in their isnaad.

3)A Sunnah which it is obligatory to know and to act on, even if some of the opponents of the People of Sunnah oppose it. Such as wiping over the socks, because it is known that it is acted upon by the vast majority of the Muslims and it is opponents are very few.

4)A Sunnah which it is obligatory to act on, being one which is transmitted by a reliable source from a reliable source. They are numerous in all categories of law and it is obligatory to act by them. An example of this is judging by the testimony of two witnesses of good character, even if they might lie or be suspect in their testimony. [The Four Imams, page 93]

When a slave commits a sin…

6 November 2009

BismiLlah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim

And It is narrated from Prophet sallaLlahu ‘alayhi wassalam who said, “When a slave commits a sin, repents to Allah and perfects his repentance, Allah accepts all good actions from him. And forgives all the sins he has committed, raises him a degree in Paradise for each sin. Allah gives him for each good deed a palace in Paradise and marries him off to a Hur from amongst the Hur al-’Ayn.” [Bahr al-Dumu' by al-Imam Ibn al-Jawz i rahimahuLlah]

O’ Messenger of Allah…

8 September 2009

BismiLlah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim

Mu’adh bin Jabal radhi Allahu ‘anhu  asked the Prophet sAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam “O’ Messenger of Allah, what is the best deed?” Prophet sAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam said, “The best deeds are that you love only for the sake of Allah and dislike only for the sake of Allah. You engage your tongue in the remembrance of Allah.” So the companion asked, “What else, O’ Messenger of Allah, is the best deed?” He sAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam said, “What you desire for yourself, you desire for other people and what you dislike for yourself you dislike for other people and you say something good otherwise remain silent.” [1]

Lessons to be learnt:

1) The concern of Companion radhi Allahu ‘anhu is shown by the question he asked RasuluLlah sAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam

2) Loving for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala brings in many benefits to a person:

a) Allah will shade him/her on the Day of Judgement

b) He/she tastes the sweetness of Iman

c) He/she will be on high seats of light on the day of Judgement

d) All of his/her sins will be forgiven by Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala

e) Allah will love that person

(all are mentioned in sahih/hasan ahadith of Prophet sAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam)

3) Also loving for the sake of Allah means that a believer is abiding by the covenant he has made with his Creator which if he hadn’t done, he would have been a faasiq

4) Disliking for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala means disapproving or opposing what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala does not like. For example, committing a sin must be an act of disapproval for a Muslim because it is what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala dislikes.

5) Engaging one’s tongue in the remembrance of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is one of the easiest acts a Muslim can do. It does not require a person to do wudhu but if someone is in major impurity (i.e. he/she is junub) then a ghusl (bath) is a prerequisite to do dhikr. Nor does it require a specific place or any type of action. A person can do dhikr anywhere except places that are filled with najas (impurity).

6) We can also understand the thirst which the Sahabah radhi Allahu ‘anhum had for gaining knowledge that the scholar of this ummah Mu’adh bin Jabal radhi Allahu ‘anhu once again asked the same question to get more pearls and gems from the Prophet sAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam

7) The Prophet sAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam is commanding Mu’adh radhi Allahu ‘anhu and all the Muslims that we must be just with all the people by desiring and disliking for oneself what one would desire or dislike for others.

8) Being just for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in this way instigates love between the two people for His sake only and thus they get the reward of the people who love each other for Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala’s sake too.

9) Saying something good otherwise keeping silent is a quality of the one who believes in Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and the Last Day as mentioned in a hadith narrate by Abu Hurairah radhi Allahu ‘anhu that Prophet sAllahu ‘alayhi wassalam said, “… Whoever believes in Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”[2]

10) This way of dealing in one’s speech saves him/her from saying something that might result in displeasure of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and finally going to Jahnnam

And indeed, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala knows best.
